Andrey Baklanov: what will make US negotiate on Syria?

The deputy head of the Council of the Russian Diplomats Association, Andrey Baklanov, speaking to Vestnik Kavkaza, commented on the growing tensions between Moscow and Washington after the incident with the attack on the humanitarian convoy near Aleppo. According to him, the Syrian army's success, which balances our forces on the ground, will make the Russian-US talks more constructive, as the US will face the need to reckon with the opinion of other participants in the process.

"The shifting balance of forces in favor of the Syrian regime, which is favorable for Russia, will resume productive talks, because for the US it is normal to conduct affairs when they understand the limits to which they control the situation," he said.

The expert recalled that Washington used to do the same thing in the situation with the missile defense agreement. "When they needed mutual limitations on the missile defense system and it was beneficial for them - they did it. When they found it useful to develop a missile defense system at a rapid pace, paying no attention to the agreement - they just left it [the agreement]," Baklanov stressed.

At the same time, the deputy head of the Council of the Russian Diplomats Association said that recent events have only further demonstrated the general principles of the US foreign policy.

In general, according to Baklanov, at the moment the ceasefire is worth fighting for only because of its humanitarian component. "But the bad thing is that this aspect is quite shamelessly used by Western partners, who do not care about the Syrian people. But we sincerely treat our Syrian friends and understand that it is necessary to look for compromise solutions to reduce the number of victims," the expert explained.

"But the position of decency should not contradict common sense," Andrey Baklanov warned.
