Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis votes to dissolve itself

Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani parliament) has adopted an appeal on the parliament’s dissolution.

During the plenary meeting of the parliament led by speaker of the parliament Ogtay Asadov, the draft appeal to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was put to the vote and adopted.

The MPs representing the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) put forward the corresponding initiative at today's parliamentary meeting. The MPs explained their initiative with the reforms, which are being carried out in Azerbaijan and emphasized that it is important that these reforms cover the legislative branch.

After discussions, it was decided to appeal to the president of Azerbaijan with a request to dissolve the parliament and call early parliamentary elections.

Recently, a meeting of the YAP Political Council, as well as a meeting with MPs representing the party in the parliament, took place. At the meeting, the MPs representing the party were recommended to speak with an initiative to dissolve the parliament.

Deputy chairman and executive secretary of the ruling party Ali Akhmedov said that such a decision was made to support the head of state’s course on reforms and personnel reshuffles.

Director of the Baku Network expert council Elkhan Aleskerov, speaking to the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza, noted that dissolution of the parliament and early parliamentary elections will allow to renew the parliamentary composition of the Milli Majlis. "This is a logical continuation of the personnel changes that are taking place in Azerbaijan, I’m talking about the latest appointments in the government and the presidential administration. Azerbaijan has significantly strengthened its economy and social sphere in recent years, strong legislative acts have been adopted in the field of politics, and updating the legislative branch is the next step on the path to the republic's development," he said.

"I think that the decision to dissolve the Milli Majlis was made in order to ensure that the socio-political life of Azerbaijan is in line with modern realities. This requires new ideas and new personnel. This update is positive and aimed at strengthening our country," Elkhan Aleskerov stressed.

"Thus, the new parliament will be called upon to create the future of Azerbaijan, propose modern models of development. This is the evolution of Azerbaijani statehood. New appointment will look at legislative initiatives in a new way," the director of the Baku Network expert council concluded.
