Azerbaijan wins 4th Baku Islamic Solidarity Games: results

The 4th Baku Islamic Solidarity Games, which were held from May 8 to 22, ended in Baku. The athletes from 54 countries competed for 269 medal sets in 21 sports, including in 17 Olympic (athletics, boxing, jumping, football, rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, handball, judo, karate, shooting, swimming, tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting and wrestling) and four non-Olympic ones (basketball 3x3, table tennis, wushu and zorkhan).

The Azerbaijani national team won the most of the Baku Islamic Games gold medals: 75 gold medals, 50 silver medals and 37 bronze medals (162 awards in total). The second place in the medal standings was taken by the Turkish national team - 71 gold medals, 67 silver and 57 bronze medals (195 medals in total). Iran won 39 gold medals, 26 silver and 33 bronze medals (98 medals in total).

The top ten: Uzbekistan (63 medals - 15 gold, 17 silver and 31 bronze medals), Bahrain (21 medals - 12 gold, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals), Algeria (40 medals - 7 gold, 12 silver and 21 bronze medals), Morocco (27 medals -  7 gold, 5 silver and 15 bronze medals), Indonesia (58 medals - 6 gold, 29 silver and 23 bronze medals), Egypt (18 medals - 6 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze medals) and Kyrgyzstan (17 medals -  4 gold, 5 silver and 8 bronze medals).

30 countries have won several awards, while Albania, Brunei, Burkina Faso, Chad, Comoros, Gabon, Guinea, Maldives, Mauritania, Niger, Palestine, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Togo won no awards.

Azerbaijan's leadership was ensured first of all by victories in strength sports events: the country won 38 gold medals out of 96. The judokas won 11 medals - 8 in men's events and 3 in women's events, the wrestlers won 12 gold medals (Greco-Russian, freestyle and women's wrestling). 6 gold medals were won in taekwondo, 5 - in karate, 3 - in boxing, and one - in zorkhan.

The second main victory of the Azerbaijani national team at the Games was gymnastics, which was included in the program of the Islamic Solidarity Games for the first time at the insistence of the first vice-president of Azerbaijan, the president of the  Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation, Mehriban Aliyeva. Out of 17 gold medals, 9 were taken by Azerbaijani gymnasts: 4 - in rhythmic gymnastics, 3 - in men's gymnastics, 2 - in women's gymnastics.

In athletics, Azerbaijan also became the leader: it has 4 gold medals in running events, 2 - in jumping and 4 - in throw events.

In shooting competitions, the Azerbaijani shooter Ruslan Lunev became the sole leader, winning 5 gold medals out of 6, won by the Azerbaijan national team.

In the women's swimming competitions 18 gold medals out of 21 were taken by Turkish swimmers. In the men's swimming events the Turkish athletes won 9 out of 20 medals.

Turkey also leads in 7 game sports: it has 8 gold medals, 6 of which are in tennis, one gold medal - in table tennis and water polo. Azerbaijan won gold in football, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball 3x3 and women's handball competitions.

Egypt showed the best result in weightlifting: one Egyptian weightlifter and 3 Egyptian female weightlifters won gold medals.
