Championship in Artistic and Acrobatics Gymnastics opens in Baku

The Azerbaijan and Baku Championship among Age Categories in Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, as well as Azerbaijan Championship in Acrobatics Gymnastics opened in Baku’s National Gymnastics Arena today.

In total, more than 150 athletes will compete for the title of champion within the two-day competitions. They will represent Baku Gymnastics School, 'Ojaq Sport' Club, Republican Olympic Spots Lyceum and Sumgait.

The chief judge of the Championship in Acrobatics Gymnastics, Irada Kurbanova, speaking with Vestnik Kavkaza, said that the tournament will allow the national team members to work out new exercises for the upcoming international competitions.

"This year juniors were not allowed to the championship of the republic, only the adult team is participating. The goal of the championship is to try our new program, because the gymnasts have just finished their performances at the junior European championship and switch to the senior program. We have already prepared a new senior program for mixed pairs, but have not worked out it yet," she said, referring to the European Championship in acrobatic gymnastics, which was held in Rzeszów, Poland, on October 13-15.

"As for the male pair of acrobats, they have coped with their task. Now both our gymnasts are seniors, and our main goal at today's tournament is to prepare them for the Belgium World Championships in April. Azerbaijan will be represented at this tournament by male seniors for the first time," Irada Kurbanova said.

"We have already determined the composition of the acrobatics team, because the choice is not so great because of age limitations. We have raised a senior team, and I think everything will be fine, we will try to perform well at the World Cup," the chief judge of the Azerbaijani championship in acrobatics gymnastics and the main coach of the acrobatic team of the republic concluded.
