Churov: ODIHR refusal to send observers to Azerbaijan was illegal

The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), after the incident in which it refused to send observers to Azerbaijan, risks worsening relations with a number of countries, the chairman of Russia’s Central Electoral Commission Vladimir Churov said, adding that it is against the law.

“I think that this incident will seriously affect the relations of a number of countries with the Office for Democratic Institutions for Human Rights,” Interfax cited him as saying.

Azerbaijan will hold parliamentary elections on November 1. In mid-September the OSCE/ODIHR announced that it would not observe the Azerbaijani elections due to the limit put on the number of observers by the country’s authorities.
