Is agreement on Iran's nuclear program a hindrance for European missile shield project?

Russian military experts are pessimistic about the creation of a missile defense shield in Europe by the US after the deal on Iran’s nuclear program has been reached.

US President Barack Obama said in 2008 that "if the Iran nuclear program issue is sorted out, then the task of creating the European segment of the missile defense system will disappear." Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recalled this phrase today. "That’s why we drew the attention of our American colleagues to this fact today and we will expect a reaction," he said.

The chief editor of 'National Defense' magazine, Igor Korotchenko, said that the US will not stop in its intention to build a missile defense system just because of the deal with Iran. "All references to the threat allegedly posed by North Korea and Iran is a cover. In fact, the missile defense system was created for the devaluation of the Russian strategic position, it is the purpose of the US program," he stressed.

And if previously the Iranian nuclear issue used to be a pretext to deploy the European segment of the missile defense system, the US needs no excuses today. "Russia is directly designated as a strategic enemy, so America will not bother itself with any new explanations, it will create and deploy a global missile defense system, which will be a part of US plans for global domination of the world," Igor Korotchenko said.

The editor-in-chief of 'Military-Industrial Courier' and the magazine 'Aerospace Defense', Michael Khodarenok, agreed with Igor Korotchenko.  "As I see it, the United States will not agree to curtail this program under any circumstances, since all of its essence is to create the conditions for the United States, which exclude a massive nuclear attack on it," the expert believes.

"They no longer need any pretexts, they will just continue to deploy elements of this system. This is a major sphere of US national security, so, in my opinion, they won't stop the work in this area under any circumstances," Mikhail Khodarenok concluded.
