Justice Minister: 26,000 detained over attempted coup in Turkey

Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said that a total of more than 26,000 people have been detained in connection with last month's failed coup attempt.

He was speaking in an interview with state-run Anadolu Agency, broadcast live on Turkish television channels.

"Over 26,000 people are currently in detention, there are also those who are trying to hide from justice. Sixteen thousand people were arrested," Haberturk TV channel cited Bozdag as saying.

A group of insurgents attempted to stage a coup in Turkey overnight on July 16.
