Russia supports any initiatives for the reconciliation of the Armenian and Azerbaijani peoples, because it promotes the search for compromises on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, said today, answering a question about the establishment of the "Armenia-Azerbaijan Platform for Peace", organized in Baku by activists of the two countries.
"We highly appreciate the role of public diplomacy in facilitating the resolution of conflicts. The most important mission is to root in social circles of the conflicting parties awareness of inevitability of peaceful search for mutually acceptable compromises. We believe that any initiative should be aimed at precisely that, and welcome any public initiatives that have set themselves this very specific mission," she stressed.
Commenting on the new US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson's statement that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict poses a threat to the US national security interests, Maria Zakharova added that in the first place a conflict threatens its parties. "The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict poses a direct threat to the security, stability and future development of Armenia and Azerbaijan," the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry concluded, the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza reports.
