Mazahir Panahov on preparations for Milli Majlis elections

About 5.2 million Azerbaijani citizens will visit polling stations on November 1 to elect the most worthy, in their opinion, citizens to the Milli Majlis, the Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission of Azerbaijan, Mazahir Panahov, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

"The representatives of 15 political parties and one party bloc represented by 7 parties were registered as candidates," Panahov said.

According to him, particular attention was paid to the members of electoral commissions (over 35 thousand people). Panahov said that during the years of independence, Azerbaijan has gained considerable experience in conducting elections and referendums, but this does not exclude the need to do a job of an educational nature.

The Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission of Azerbaijan also spoke about the changes in comparison with preparations for the previous elections. "First of all, thanks to our experience there was less dissatisfaction from voters. Secondly, over the years we have increasingly been getting rid of immutable units from the Soviet past, such as 'elections must be held perfectly', Panahov noted.

According to him, "the task of the CEC is to create equal conditions for each candidate in accordance with democratic principles," providing "a place for meetings with voters, air time for election campaigns on TV and radio."

All the activities of the CEC meet the main principle - the principle of transparency, the head of the commission stressed.

"For this purpose we, not only the CEC, but also the Milli Majlis and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have invited observers from various countries and representatives of international organizations," he said. "The main thing for us is that the public of Azerbaijan be satisfied with the elections," Panahov concluded.
