Moscow State University marks 263rd anniversary

Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov celebrates its 263rd anniversary today, while Russian students are marking Tatyana’s Day.

Today the Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia will hold a solemn service in the Temple of St. Tatyana the Martyr. After which the traditional meeting of academics working in Moscow State University will be held, awards and diplomas will be presented to distinguished professors and scholarships were awarded to the best students.

Tomorrow, the MSU rector Victor Sadovnichy will serve traditional mead for students.

The tradition to celebrate this day started in the 18th century. In 1755, on that day the Empress Elizabeth signed the decree on the foundation of Moscow University. The day coincided with the memorial day of the Holy Martyr Tatyana, who became the patroness of all Russian students. Russian students celebrate the January 25th as the Moscow Studenthood Day since 2005.
