New type of transnational crime disclosed in Armenia

Armenia’s National Security Service (NSS) has revealed ‘a new kind of transnational crime,’ committed in Armenia for the first time.

According to a NSS press release, a string of investigative measures revealed that a group of Armenian citizens, having conspired with their accomplices abroad, brought euro banknotes to Armenia, which are usually used to ensure the security of ATMs, and are painted with special paints. The banknotes were withdrawn from legal circulation.

The members of the criminal group intended to clear the banknotes by using special chemicals, to make them look old and sell in Armenia.

As a result of preventive measures carried out by the National Security Service, the members of the group were unable to complete their criminal intentions and banknotes withdrawn from legal turnover were found and confiscated.

Three people were detained as part of the investigation. The authorities are trying now to establish the identity of other possible members of the group, as well as  to reveal other cases of similar crimes that may have been committed in the past, ARKA reports.
