Pope Leo XIV expressed concern after an Israeli strike targeted Hamas leadership in the Qatari capital Doha, calling the situation "very serious."
"There's some really serious news right now: Israel's attack on some Hamas leaders in Qatar," the pontiff said outside his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.
"The entire situation is very serious. We do not know how things will go. It is really serious," Leo said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in turn, strongly condemned an Israeli strike on Doha.
"I condemn this flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar," Guterres said.
He urged all sides to "work towards achieving a permanent ceasefire, not destroying."
