Putin and Obama meet in Hangzhou

Russian and US Presidents, Vladimir Putin and Barack Obama, held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit. The meeting was also attended, among others, by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the US Secretary of State John Kerry.

The meeting between them went off well and lasted longer than planned. The Syrian issue and Ukraine were discussed first and foremost, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters following talks, TASS reports.

"The meeting lasted longer than planned. (The two presidents) discussed, above all, Syria and Ukraine. After that Obama and Putin a one-on-one meeting behind closed doors," the Kremlin spokesman said.

He added that the meeting went off well. "The work will continue," Peskov said.

Recall that during the first day of the summit the two leaders spoke several times briefly agreeing to meet on Monday. A source in the Russian delegation told reporters that the meeting was initiated by the US president.

The Russian and US presidents spoke over the phone several times earlier this year.
