Russians do not believe in possibility of nuclear war

Russians do not feel any significant effect from the decision to suspend the US-Russia cooperation in the nuclear field, the poll results say.

According to VCIOM, the majority of respondents (59%) are aware of the suspension of cooperation agreements between the US and Russia in the nuclear and energy sectors. Among retired people this percentage is higher (72%).

The overwhelming majority of respondents believes the main reason for the 'nuclear freeze' is the actions of the United States: its "aggression" - 12%, "the policy towards Russia" - 12%.

However, the majority of Russians (58%) has no idea what possible consequences of the decision could be for our country. At the same time, every fifth respondent believes that this decision will not affect the situation in the country.

On October 3, 2016. Moscow has suspended an agreement with the US on the disposal of surplus weapons-grade plutonium. Vladimir Putin signed a decree and submitted the bill to the State Duma. The reason was Washington’s failure to fulfill its obligations. On October 19, 2016, the State Duma adopted a law suspending  the agreement between Russia and the United States on plutonium disposal.

The survey was conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) in Russia on October 15-16, 2016.
