Many regions of the former Soviet Union, including in Russia, still remember the first President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev thanks to the facilities which were created when he was the deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, the head of the Parliament’s Office, Safa Mirzoyev, said in an interview with a correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza on the sidelines of official events held in the framework of the visit by representatives of the Russian media to Azerbaijan on the eve of the parliamentary elections on November 1st.
"He was a member of the Politburo, the first deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and oversaw the construction sector. He did so much in 1980s that it is very difficult to list everything," he said.
"People in those areas, where something was built under his leadership, speak very well of him. It's not just on the territory of modern Russia but also of the former Soviet Union. Heydar Aliyev was a very demanding, but fair man," Mirzoyev added.
The head of the Milli Mejlis also pointed out that Russian-Azerbaijani cooperation is often discussed in the parliament.
"Russia is one of our main economic partners, we are strategic partners, so a lot of agreements and treaties are being ratified in this room. Russia is not only a close neighbor, but also a good friend," he stressed.
