Sergey Lebedev: CIS worries about escalation in Nagorno-Karabakh

The aggravation of the situation and deadly clashes in the Nagorno-Karabakh region have "caused deep pain and great concern in all CIS countries," the chairman of the Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary Sergey Lebedev said.

"Friends and partners of Azerbaijan and Armenia in the CIS countries sincerely hope that both sides will show prudence, stop the bloodshed and find an opportunity for the speedy resumption of the peace dialogue for the benefit of the peoples of both countries," he stressed.

According to Lebedev, "the presidents and foreign ministers of a number of CIS member states have already appealed to their Azerbaijani and Armenian counterparts, urging them to take immediate steps to cease hostilities and resume the search for a peaceful resolution of the conflict."

"Young Azerbaijanis and Armenians are dying, thousands of people are suffering, enormous damage to both sides is being caused – all this greatly undermines the basis for resumption of peace," TASS cited the CIS executive secretary as saying.
