Georgia's parliament has elected the country’s new Chief Prosecutor Shalva Tadumadze with 101 votes for and two against in the 150-member legislative body.
Tadumadze, who has served as the government’s parliamentary secretary since 2012, will replace Irakli Shotadze in the role, as the latter resigned on May 31.
Tadumadze was among the three nominees of the justice minister and was the only candidate selected by the prosecutorial council for the position which became electable through major changes to the law in 2015, Agenda.ge reported.
Before being approved by parliament Tadumadze had to answer lawmakers’ questions. In response to a question concerning his qualifications Tadumadze stated that he has always been a successful lawyer and served the interests of very influential people in the country including former Prime Minister, Bidzina Ivanishvili among them.
Prior to the nomination for the position of chief prosecutor, Tadumadze was appointed as the head of the government administration.
