Zarif: Iran's unilateral prudence is not sustainable

Tehran has refused to break or even downgrade diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia, but unilateral prudence is not sustainable, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote in a letter to the New York Times.

The diplomat recalled that since the first days after the start of the conflict, he and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani have repeatedly urged the Saudi authorities to engage in dialogue to defuse the tension, but this has fallen on deaf ears in Saudi Arabia.

"The Saudi leadership must now make a choice: they can continue supporting extremists and promoting sectarian hatred, or they can opt to play a constructive role in promoting regional stability," RIA Novosti cited Zarif as saying.
