The International Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers decided to provide Russia with a new ‘рф’ domain on 22nd April, RIA Novosti reports from the Ministry of Communications.
“Russia became the world’s first country to receive a national Cyrillic domain - ‘рф’, says the ministry report.
ICANN’s decision is the final bureaucratic procedure in providing the domain, Yulia Ovchinnikova, member of Co-ordinating center’s council, explains.
She added that ICAAN's technical center, IANA, needs to physically lift the domain, which may take 2 or 3 months. Besides Russia, other countries like Egypt, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia had their national language domains approved on Thursday.
