Iranian foreign minister and UN Security Council did not discuss sanctions

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki did not discuss sanctions
against Iran with diplomats from the UN Security Council, RIA Novosti
reports, citing the Japanese envoy at the UN, Yuki Takako.

The meeting, which took place on Thursday night and went on into the
early hours of Friday, was organized at the initiative of Mottaki. Of
15 members of the Security Council, only Nigeria and Gabon were not
present. The five permanent members with the veto, Russia, China, the
USA, Great Britain, France, participated.

The Japanese ambassador was the only person to give interviews after
the meeting. Takako said that the world community expects more
cooperation from Iran.

Iran was discussing its nuclear program at such a high level for the first time.

Washington suspects Iran of developing nuclear arms, but Iran insists
that their program is peaceful.

At May 4 at the NPT conference in the UN Headquarters President
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad expressed his readiness to discuss the terms of
exchange of Iranian low-enriched uranium for nuclear fuel for Iranian
research reactor. Russia and China have said they favor a diplomatic
solution to the crisis over the preferred US option of harsher
sanctions.
