PACE may close political file on South Ossetian conflict

The briefer of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe on
the South Ossetian conflict in August 2008, David Wilshire, presented
a package of propositions on closing the Russian-Georgian file, said
deputy of the Russian delegation in PACE and first deputy chairman of
the Duma committee on foreign affairs, Leonid Slutskiy, ITAR-TASS
reports.

According to Slutskiy, David Wilshire considers that the Assembly
report in April by former head of the EU international mission on
South Ossetia, Heidi Tagliavini, had been presented with all the facts
and circumstances of the conflict.

He said that the monitoring commission postponed the new elections to
the post of briefer until June, in order to replace Matiash Ershi, in
co-authorship with whom the most radical PACE resolutions were made,
including the demanding of Moscow to cancel Abkhaz and South Ossetian
recognition. The commission allows the UK briefer David Wilshire to
remain in place.

Slutskiy clarified that they will not return to discussions of the
issue before the autumn. The aftermaths of the Russian-Georgian war
will not be considered within the report.
