European Parliament arguments on South Ossetian war report

The European Parliament approves the basic arguments of the report
made by the independent international commission of the EU headed by
Heidi Tagliavini, investigating the circumstances of the South
Ossetian conflict. The report shows that Georgia was the initiator of
the war in South Ossetia, the resolution made at a plenary session of
the Supreme Legislative Body of the EU in Strasbourg said, ITAR-TASS
reports.

Tagliavini said that facts revealed in the report can be used in
international lawsuits in The Hague, based on the European Convention
on Human Rights, the resolution says.

The deputies supported the idea of expanding the EU mission in the
Caucasus. The parliament's members urged the sides involved in the
conflict to observe the cease-fire agreement between Russia and
Georgia and provide security and free access in the region for the
mission’s staff.

Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's isolation are counter-productive in
searches for a resolution of the situation. As the only forum, the
Geneva discussions on security in the Caucasus gain importance. The
forum involves the conflict sides, the UN, the EU and the OSCE, who
are working on stability in the region.

The document also emphasizes the EU's support for the territorial
unity and inviolability of Georgia's borders as recognized by the
international community.
