OPEC states fail to elect secretary general

Attendants of the two-day OPEC session have failed to elect a new secretary general to replace Abdallah el-Badri (Libya). Representative of Libya at the OSCE Samir Salem Kamal said that recommendations of candidates will be sent to a conference of ministers.

El-Badri will conclude his second 3-year terms of office. He may be replaced by Iranian former Petroleum Minister Holam-Husein Nozari or former representative of Saudi Arabia at OPEC Majid al-Munif.

The final decision will be made at the conference of ministers in Vienne on December 12.
