Azerbaijan and Turkey to form Eurasian Energy Union

Gurkan Kumbaroglu, the president of the International Association for Energy Economics, said that the Azerbaijani company SOCAR has reached an agreement with Turkey to form the Eurasian Energy Union, headquartered in Istanbul. The Union will initially consist of Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. It will further expand by granting membership to Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania. After realization of the Turkish Stream project, it will adjoin Greece, Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The expert noted that some countries had differences, for example, Kosovo and Serbia. Kumbaroglu noted that pipelines will connect countries and confer benefits on all of them. The Turkish Stream, in his words, will run from Serbia to Macedonia and reach the Balkans.

Macedonia borders on Kosovo, the pipeline will run from Kosovo to Serbia. The Eurasian Energy Union, according to Kumbaroglu, will be a platform to discuss problems of delivery, transit and processing of hydrocarbons.

Experts, energy professionals and academicians will be working at the Union. It will not be a political organization or an analogue of OPEC. It will be a consultative platform, the expert concluded.
