Azerbaijan passes bill on participation in peacekeeping operations

The Azerbaijani parliament passed a bill in the third reading on
Azerbaijan's participation in peacekeeping operations, Trend reports.

“The law specifies the basis, forms and rules of Azerbaijani
participation in peacekeeping operations, concerning warning,
settlement and solution of local and regional conflicts”, said a
member of the committee of the Milli Majlis (the Azerbaijani
parliament) on security and defense, Siavush Novruzov.

Azerbaijan can participate in peacekeeping operations without sending
armed forces. It can send food, medical aid, means of communication
and transport, including humanitarian aid and other material-technical
resources, he said.

45 Azerbaijani peacekeepers from the armed forces are participating in
patrolling Kabul as part of the International Forces assisting in the
security of Afghanistan.

In October last year the parliament doubled the number of peacekeepers to 90.

Due to the political situation after the separation of Kosovo and
Serbia, the parliament of Azerbaijan decided to withdraw 34
peacekeepers from the region.

The stint of 150 Azerbaijani military servicemen as part of the
multinational forces in Iraq has ended.
