Russian Ambassador at the UN Vitaly Churkin urged the public not to attach much importance to public statements of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
"Russia has invested heavily in this crisis — politically, diplomatically and also militarily. Therefore, we, of course, would like Bashar al-Assad to respond to this," Churkin said.
At the same time, the Russian representative noted that one should not attach too much importance to the words of the president of Syria, because it is important what he will do eventually.
"If the Syrian authorities, despite the internal political situation and the propaganda policy which they need to pursue, follow Russia’s lead in resolving this crisis, they will have a chance to get out of the crisis with dignity," Gazeta.ru cited Churkin as saying.
