A majority of Georgian citizens agree with the Government’s decision not to join economic sanctions against Russia following the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine last month, a poll by the Georgian Opinion Research Business International (GORBI) shows.
The polling agency asked its respondents the question: “The Georgian Dream Government did not join the economic sanctions against Russia. Do you think this step of the Government is right or wrong?”, with 64.5% answering Yes, 30.4% calling the decision wrong and 5.2% responding by saying they were not sure, or refused to answer.
Of the respondents who identified as supporters of the United National Movement opposition party, 25 percent thought that the Government had done the right thing by not joining the sanctions.
Commissioned by TV Imedi, the survey was conducted GORBI between March 10-16 across Georgia, involving 1,008 respondents interviewed by telephone. The agency said its margin of error was 3%.
On March 16, the ruling Georgian Dream party head Irakli Kobakhidze said the Government’s stance on not imposing sanctions against Russia remained unchanged and “no one could change” it.
In his comments, Kobakhidze stressed by imposing economic sanctions against Russia the Government would not be able to “harm” it, but would put its own country and population “under the heaviest blow”.
