Maria Zakharova to Vestnik Kavkaza: Russia and Turkey share common platform on Syrian settlement

The most important thing in the Russian-Turkish contacts on Syria today is that the parties resumed their cooperation, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, said, answering a question from Vestnik Kavkaza on the approximation of the positions of Moscow and Ankara on the Syrian settlement.

"The most important thing is that the dialogue has started. I think that its absence has thrown the Syrian settlement back and has certainly slowed progress," the diplomat noted in the first place.

"Talking about the positions of Russia and Turkey, analyzing certain statements made by politicians and public figures, we must not forget a very important thing: both Russia and Turkey signed and adopted the general documents as a plan of actions, which, after passing through the UN Security Council, became binding not only for our two countries, but also for the rest of the world. This is the common platform through which we are working together with Turkey," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson noted.

"If we talk about the commonality or similarity of our positions, then it's all said in documents of the International Syrian Support Group and the UN Security Council resolutions, and a concrete embodiment or realization of these positions is implemented through our dialogue with Ankara," Maria Zakharova concluded.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said following his visit to Moscow that Russia and Turkey understand each other better than ever before. "We have a common approach in working out the resolution to the crisis in Syria," he stressed.
