Muslim world celebrates birthday of Prophet Muhammad

On December 22-23, Muslims all over the world are marking the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad – Mawlid al-Nabi. According to tradition, it falls on the 12th day of the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar Rabi-ul-Awwal, although his exact date of birth is unknown.

The birthday of the Prophet Muhammad is the third most important date for Muslims after the holidays of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, which is celebrated with prayers and Quran readings. It is a tradition to invite and entertain guests, read the Hadiths and give alms.

A special festive prayer will be held today in Moscow's Cathedral Mosque, TASS reports.

People began to celebrate the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (570-632 CE) only 300 years after the adoption of Islam, it was first mentioned in the 12th century. It was believed that its emergence was due to Christmas, due to which for a long time it wasn't recognized by the religious authorities. However, the date was later accepted as an 'approved innovation'.
