Iranian nuclear power plant to be launched on time

The nuclear power plant in Bushehr will be launched at the end of
summer 2010, the head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko said today, RIA
Novosti
reports.

Construction of the Bushehr power plant was started in 1975 by German
companies, but due to the Iranian revolution, the occupation of the US
embassy in Tehran and the US embargo on high-tech imports to Iran, the
contract was cancelled.

In January 1995 Zarubezhatomenergostroy and the Organization for
Iranian Atomic Energy signed a contract in Tehran on completion of the
first block of the station. Russia was obliged to deliver one
VVER-1000 reactor and nuclear fuel and to train Iranian specialists.
In February 1998 Russia and Iran agreed on Russia completing the
construction of the power plant.

The construction was due to be completed on 8th July 1999, but the
deadlines for commissioning the Bushehr plant kept being postponed.
