The Turkish opposition failed to agree on a single candidate for the upcoming presidential elections in May: Homeland Party Chairman Muharrem Ince said he will not withdraw his candidacy, after hosting main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on Wednesday.
In a joint news conference following the meeting, Muharrem Ince told reporters that he would not withdraw his candidacy.
A total of four candidates will be competing in Türkiye’s upcoming elections: Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, Muharrem Ince, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Sinan Oğan. Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the joint candidate of the six-party opposition bloc Nation Alliance, is the main challenger to Recep Tayyip Erdogan nominated by the People's Alliance.
General elections in Turkey are scheduled to take place on 14 May 2023. As the main opposition party's candidate in the 2018 Turkish presidential election, Ince received just over 30% of the votes. After the post-election fallout with the CHP, Ince went on to establish his own party in 2021.
