Georgia celebrates National Unity Day on Sunday. Today, residents of the republic remember the victims of the tragic events that happened exactly 34 years ago. On that day, thousands of demonstrators in Tbilisi were dispersed by the military, as a result of which 21 people died and almost 300 were injured. Toxic gas was used against the demonstrators, its composition is still unknown.

According to tradition, on April 9, citizens bring flowers and candles to the Parliament building. A memorial service will be held in the churches. The authorities also participate in mass events dedicated to the mourning date. In particular, they will lay wreaths at the memorial, which is located near the Parliament building.

To investigate the April events of 1989, the Congress of People's Deputies of the USSR formed a special commission, which subsequently came to the conclusion that the military used excessive force against the demonstrators.

Let us remind you that due to the restrictions in force in the republic against the backdrop of the spread of coronavirus, all official events were canceled on April 9 last year.
