More than 20,000 participants in the riots that took place in the autumn were released in Iran, the head of the judiciary of the Islamic Republic said.
According to Gholam-Hossein Mohseni Ejei, since March 21 last year, amnesty has been introduced for 82 thousand people, and their number may increase. Among those amnestied, there are 22 thousand convicted for participating in the protests, Tasnim reports.
Ejei specified that for another 34 thousand prisoners, the punishment was not completely canceled, but mitigated.
The official pointed out that those who committed a serious crime or were caught stealing were not amnestied.
Protests in Iran
Mass protests in Iran began in mid-September last year. They were provoked by an emergency at the police station: 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died during the interrogation. She was detained due to improper wearing of a headscarf. After her death, experts did not find any injuries, the cause of her death was a heart attack.
