Sports capitals will appear in the Commonwealth of Independent States. The cities were determined at a meeting of the CIS Ministerial Council in Samarkand. Minsk has become the CIS sports capital of this year.
Minsk and Gyumri received the right to be called the sports capitals of the CIS in 2023 and 2024, respectively. The relevant decision was made during a meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth countries in Samarkand, the press service of the CIS Executive Committee reports.
The decision on the program "Sports Capitals of the Commonwealth" was made during the Astana Ministerial Council in October last year. According to Executive Committee, today, the CIS needs to hold more sports events.
"The decision was facilitated by the successful 2021 CIS Games that were held in Kazan in 2021. The Games resonated in the sports environment and gave impetus to the development of new sports initiatives," the message of the press-service reads.
The status of the sports capital is awarded every year to one of the cities of the Commonwealth countries.
