Chair of Georgia's United National Movement opposition party Levan Khabeishvili resigned from his position, citing health problems.

He announced the decision at a press briefing at the party’s central office on June 8.

Khabeishvili suggested party member Tina Bokuchava would replace him.

According to him, doctors had recommended a more relaxed work regime after he received injuries during a rally against the foreign agents law in Tbilisi in early May.

The outgoing chair said he would nominate himself as a candidate for the position of the Chair of the Political Council of the party.

Khabeishvili was elected as party Chair last year, after defeating his opponent Nika Melia in an election that followed intra-party controversies.
