Matthias Dornfeldt, a political analyst of the Berlin Center for Caspian Region Studies, was an observer in Azerbaijan and he the described prospects of development after the presidential polls.- Mr. Dornfeldt, what is your evaluation of the voting in Azerbaijan?

Interview by Vestnik KavkazaA week has passed since the announcement of the results of the presidential elections in Azerbaijan, and nobody intends to dispute them (the victory of Ilham Aliyev is obvious). However, discussions of whether the elections were democratic continue. Vestnik Kavkaza interviewed a political scientist from the Berlin Center for Caspian Region Studies, Mathias Dornfeld, who was in Azerbaijan as an observer. He also spoke about the prospects for Azerbaijan’s developments after the presidential elections.

Political analyst Stanislav Pritchin believes that SOCAR is the leader in terms of technology in the CIS for the development of offshore fields. According to the analyst, the cooperation between SOCAR and Rosneft offers great prospects; however, these are not the only areas of cooperation where Russia and Azerbaijan will be able to carry out productive work. 

Azerbaijani gas to be cheaper than Russian

Kenan Yavuz, head of the SOCAR Turkey Enerji Petkim, said that the SOCAR was planning to launch TANAP in 2018 and make Azerbaijani gas cheaper that the Russian, Trend reports.SOCAR partners developing Shah Deniz were planning to distribute shares: 12% for Statoil and BP each and 5% for Total. The TANAP project will allow shipments of 16 billion cubic meters of Shah Deniz gas to Europe every year, about 6 billion of which will be transferred to Turkey.

If after 2036 Azerbaijan does not extend contracts for the development of Shah Deniz gas and condensate field with foreign partners, all commitments on gas contracts will be taken over by the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), the company's president Rovnag Abdullayev said at a press conference on Thursday, Trend reports.According to Abdullayev, in 2012 it was decided to extend the contract until 2036.The total reserves of the Shah Deniz field are estimated at 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas.

Jambulat Sarsenov, deputy head of KAZENERGY, said at a meeting with Karen Agustivian, President and Executive Director of Pertamina (Indonesia), that hosting the 22nd World Petroleum Congress in Astana in 2017 will be an important reputational project for Kazakhstan, Trend reports.Sarsenov presented the project for the congress to Pertamina  to the Pertamina delegation. The head of the Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan Elmar Mamedyarov will visit the UK on September 3-5. He will discuss prospects of the bilateral relations within the working visit, the press service of the Foreign Ministry reports. It is planned that he will meet his colleague William Hague, members of the parliamentary committees on foreign contacts and energy affairs, and the general executive director of BP Lamar McKay.

BP spent $1.02 billion on Azerbaijani projects in January-June 2013, Trend reports.$396 million were spent on 347 small and medium enterprises, $77 million on 29 state companies, $274 million on joint ventures with local partners, $276 million on foreign contractors, 0.26% on the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli Field, $0.26 million on the Shah Deniz Field, $0.52 million on the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipelines and $0.4 million on projects of social responsibility.

SOCAR and BP purchased 20% of shares of the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) each, Total got 10%, Fluxys got 16%.Statoil keeps 20% of the TAP shares, E.ON 9%, Axpo 5%. TAP Managing Director Kyetil Tungland approved the purchase, stating that it would strengthen the Southern Gas Corridor.

Fluxys (Belgium) has been showing interest in the project.The TAP was selected as the final route of the Southern Gas Corridor to transport Shah Deniz gas.
