The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that militants fighting the Syrian government have seized control of the southern town of Bosra near the border with Jordan after four days of battles, Interfax reports.The ancient city of Bosra is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. The first mention of the settlement dates back to the XIV century.There are ruins from Roman, Byzantine and Islamic times in Bosra, including one of the best preserved ancient theaters in the world.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Petko Draganov of Bulgaria as his Special Representative and the head of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA).The UNRCCA was established by the Security Council at the initiative of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in connection with the growth of international terrorism and illegal drug production.

 Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov said at the 10th SCO forum in Khanty-Mansiysk today that Iran may become a member of the SCO on condition that the UN would lift its sanctions, RIA Novosti reports.Iran has already filed a bid to change its status from observer to full-fledged member of the organization.

US ambassador to Azerbaijan visits Gobustan reserve

The US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Robert Cekuta, has visited the Gobustan historical site, according to a message posted on the official Facebook page of the embassy.It is the diplomat’s first visit to an Azerbaijani region.The Gobustan historical site is also an archaeological reserve. The Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape was included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2007, Trend reports.

The Russian President's Special Representative at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, Bahtier Khakimov, said that the BRICS summit will be held in Ufa on 8-10 July, and the SCO summit are scheduled for July 10. "The dates are already known: BRICS summit will be held on July 8-10, the SCO summit will be held on July 10 in Ufa.

Mezentsev: Ufa waits for the leaders of Iran, India and Pakistan

Russia welcomes Iran, India and Pakistan joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Secretary General Dmitry Mezentsev said.  He recalled that, along with India, Pakistan and Iran that have applied for full membership of the SCO, several states are trying to get the status of observers and dialogue partners. Applications for observer status were filed by Syria, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Bangladesh.
