Sea freight volumes on the Caspian Sea between Russia and Iran could rise significantly amid the current situation in the Middle East, according to Dmitry Zverev, State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Transport of Russia.

"Considering the changed logistics of the past month, we expect a significant increase in freight traffic due to grain, metals, timber, and many other cargoes",

Zverev said.

He added that both Iranian ports and Russian Caspian ports - Astrakhan and Makhachkala - are ready to handle the anticipated growth.

Zverev noted that the effectiveness of this route was demonstrated by a memorandum on establishing a consortium of shipping and port companies from Russia and Iran, signed by the parties in November 2025, TASS reported.

"We now understand that we can move forward in terms of the route's status and the growth of export volumes, which we have never achieved before",

Dmitry Zverev said.
