“Elections” in Nagorno-Karabakh: political effect of private visit

The so-called elections which took place in Nagorno-Karabakh yesterday provoked many comments all over the world. An effort to cause side effects and draw attention succeeded, but negatively. Almost all the countries directly or indirectly involved in the mediation mission on a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict criticized the voting, calling it a blow to the negotiating process.However, the Armenian side managed to gather a small group of international observers (about 80 people) who came from a dozen countries, including Russia.

According to the bill, a free mandate should be passed to a candidate from the same region as the resigned MP. Parties’ authorities cannot affect the process of passing the mandate.The Communist Party, LDPR and A Fair Russia warned about their plans to leave the session, should the topic be raised.

The State Duma, the lower chamber of the Russian parliament, is discussing Dmitry Medvedev's candidacy for the prime minister's office, RIA Novosti reports. Newly-elected President Vladimir Putin suggested Medvedev's candidacy to the country's lawmakers on Monday, right after his inauguration.The ruling United Russia party and the populist LDPR party are expected to vote in favour, the Communist party and the socialist A Just Russia party are going to oppose Medvedev's candidacy.
