The Russian Foreign Ministry criticized Armenia for its plans to join the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Calling Yerevan's intentions "absolutely unacceptable," the Foreign Ministry said that the Armenian side was warned "about the extremely negative" consequences such a move could have on bilateral relations.

Armenia's Constitutional Court published a decision on Friday that the Rome Statute complied with the country's basic law. The decision was final and took effect with its publication.

Russia and ICC

In 2016, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an order saying that Russia did not plan to become an ICC member.

The Rome Statute is the treaty that established the ICC, it was adopted in 1998 and entered into force in 2002. Russia signed the Rome statute in 2000 but never ratified the agreement to become a member.
