Iran formally informed the United Nations that Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal, has expired as of October 18, 2025.
Iran said on Saturday that it was no longer bound by the 2015 agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), under which international sanctions were lifted in exchange for limitations on Tehran’s nuclear programme.
From now on “all of the provisions, including the restrictions on the Iranian nuclear programme and the related mechanisms are considered terminated”, Iran’s foreign ministry said, adding that the country “firmly expresses its commitment to diplomacy”.
The deal was signed in Vienna by Iran, China, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and the United States.
While the agreement officially expires on Saturday, it has been in disarray for years.
In 2018, U.S. President Donald Trump took the US out of the deal and reinstated sanctions.
