The U.S. State Department has renewed its "do not travel" advisory for Russia on January 2, urging American citizens to leave Russia immediately.
The U.S. Department of State keeps Russia at the highest travel advisory level ('Level 4: Do Not Travel').
"U.S. citizens in Russia should leave immediately," the statement reads.
It was noted that the U.S. government has limited ability to help U.S. citizens in Russia, especially outside of Moscow.
"The U.S. Embassy in Moscow has reduced its staff. The Russian government has also restricted travel for embassy personnel. All U.S. consulates in Russia have suspended operations, including consular services," the statement reads.
The existing travel advisory was reissued this week without edits, with the State Department citing a myriad of high risks related to terrorism, wrongful detention and "arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
