The month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, has begun for followers of Islam. It marks the beginning of 1446 Hijri.
The month of Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam, along with the months of Dhul-Qa'dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Rajab. In Muharram, wars and any conflicts that lead to bloodshed are prohibited.
During the days of the month, a Muslim should do more good deeds and give up everything forbidden. During this month, bad deeds done by a believer are worse than in other months, and the person will be generously rewarded for good deeds.
Adherents of the religion are advised to fast during this month by refusing to eat or drink during the daytime. The believer will receive rewards for one day of fasting as for 30 days of abstinence.
In addition to this, the Day of Ashura falls on the 10th day of the month of Muharram. This year, it will be on July 16th. The day is associated with the Battle of Karbala, during which Imam Hussain was killed.
