Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi denounces comments by U.S. President Donald Trump as “reckless and dangerous” after the U.S. president threatened to intervene on behalf of protesters taking to the streets in the Islamic Republic.

The FM said the Iranian military is on standby. He noted the protests had been mostly peaceful, but that attacks on public property would not be tolerated.

"Trump’s message today, likely influenced by those who fear diplomacy or mistakenly believe it is unnecessary, is reckless and dangerous," Abbas Araghchi said.

Protests in Iran were triggered by an unprecedented decline in the value of the national currency. The Iranian rial dropped to about 1.4m to the U.S. dollar, further harming an economy.
