Armenia to ask Russia to remove border guards from Akhurik checkpoint

Armenian authorities are planning to remove Russian border guards from the Akhurik border checkpoint on the border with Türkiye in the near future, Armenian media outlets reported citing a source in diplomatic circles.

According to the source, the decision to hand over the Akhurik checkpoint to Armenian border guards has already been made.

Preparatory steps, including the installation of a flagpole, have been completed. However, the Russian border guards remain at the checkpoint for now.

According to sources, the commissioning of Akhurik indicate Yerevan's intentions to reopen the Armenian-Turkish border in the foreseeable future.
