Pakistan plans to recognize Armenia as a United Nations member state in order to get a green light to join the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), TASS reported citing sources.

"Pakistan indeed plans to do that to ensure a consensus on its EAEU accession in return," a source said.

Another diplomatic source noted that the relevant procedure could take weeks to months, this will happen in the foreseeable future. The source stressed there are no obstacles left now that Armenia and Azerbaijan have signed a peace agreement.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russia welcomed the resumption of communication between Yerevan and Islamabad.

On August 31, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar held a meeting on the sidelines of the SCO summit in China and signed a communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Pakistan had not recognized Armenia as an independent state for many years, thus expressing its condemnation of the occupation of 20% of Azerbaijani territory by Armenian troops. The situation has changed after the signing of the Joint Declaration on August 8 by the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan.
