The EU has expressed support for an opposition rally in Georgia and criticized the conduct of the recent elections. Tbilisi believes the European Union should apologize to the Georgian authorities.

Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili said that Georgia expects an apology from the European Union, not critical statements about the concluded elections.

"[EU High Representative Kaja] Kallas and [European Commissioner Josep] Borrell are not apologizing for their spokesperson's support of a rally aimed at overthrowing the government, which resulted in 25 police officers being injured during an attack on the Georgian presidential palace. Yet, this is precisely what Georgian society expects from the European Union today," Papuashvili said.

The EU officials criticized the local elections in the country. Tbilisi has called on EU representatives to refrain from spreading false information that could escalate the situation in Georgia.

"Regarding the assessment of the Georgian elections, I once again call on all EU representatives to abstain from disseminating false and unsubstantiated information, which emboldens radical forces to undermine democracy," Papuashvili said.

The elections in Georgia were held last weekend, on October 4th. The Georgian Dream ruling party dominated the election, scoring 81% of the vote.
