Russia has assumed its duties as President of the United Nations Security Council.

Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya will outline the Security Council's October agenda during a press conference at UN Headquarters, followed by a closed briefing for member states.

The Council typically convenes approximately 20 monthly meetings on diverse topics. While September focused on Iranian sanctions, October may continue this discussion among other key international peace and security matters.

Presidential responsibilities include drafting the monthly program, coordinating decisions on holding extraordinary Security Council meetings, and maintaining procedural order during meetings.

Russia last held the Security Council presidency in July 2024, with South Korea preceding and Sierra Leone succeeding the current term. The UN was founded on October 24, 1945.
