Russia possesses coal reserves sufficient for the next 500 years, according to Russia's Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev, who outlined major development prospects for the industry.

According to the minister, Russia's reserves total 274 billion tonnes. With these figures, Russia ranks third globally for coal exports, sixth for production, and fifth for total reserves.

"That is to say, we have enough coal for approximately another 500 years, which is why we see enormous prospects for developing our coal industry," Tsivilev said.

However, the minister acknowledged the industry is currently facing challenging times. To support the industry, the Energy Ministry has developed a special program.

He emphasized that the coal sector is implementing technological upgrades, including the use of AI, drones, and digital twins. The official noted that these new technologies are being deployed in processing, mining, and power generation. Another promising field, Tsivilev added, is coal chemistry.
